Medical Social Services

At different stages of life, you or your family members may encounter social, financial or psychosocial challenges related to health and caregiving.

Speak to a Medical Social Worker (MSW) if you need support in these areas:

Crisis Intervention and Safety Support

If you or someone in your family is experiencing any of the following crises:

  • Family violence (including domestic violence)
  • Suspected elderly or child abuse or neglect
  • Depression with suicidal thoughts
  • Suicide attempt(s) or risk of self-harm

Please inform our staff so that a MSW can provide help as soon as possible.

Care Planning and Support for Caregivers

While caregiving can be satisfying and meaningful, it can also be physically, emotionally and psychologically demanding.

Learn how to take better care of yourself and your family member(s). If necessary, the MSW will refer you to community-based services so that you or your family member(s) can continue to be cared for at home.

If living at home is no longer a viable option, you may also talk to the MSW about the option of residential care.

Counselling Support and Psychosocial Support

If you are facing difficulties coping with:

  • The impact of illness or chronic medical conditions
  • Caregiver stress or burnout
  • Family or relationship challenges
  • Other life stressors affecting your wellbeing
MSWs provide short term counselling and psychosocial support and may recommend referrals to other services when longer term or specialised support is required.

Financial Assistance

If you have financial difficulties and are unable to afford your basic daily living expenses, mobility aids, home care equipment or medical-related items, a MSW will assess your financial situation and make the appropriate financial applications to assist you.

Information and Referral

You may speak to a MSW to find out which community resources would be he most suitable for you and receive the necessary referrals to these organisations and access to the relevant assistance schemes.
